1. Rhymes end with the same sound
Words that rhyme must have the same sound at the end of their pronunciation.
Pronounce the words below and listen to the sound that they all end with.
โ Day
โ Say
โ Slay
โ May
โ Pray
Notice that the above words all ended with the same vowel sound /eษช/ which makes them rhyme with each other.
NOTE โ it is only the sound at the end that must be similar and NOT the sound at the beginning.
2. Rhymes may not always end with the same letters
It is not unusual for words to sound the same even with different spellings.
Pronounce the words below and listen to the sound that they all end with.
โ Through
โ True
โ Crew
Notice that the words above had different last letters, but they all ended with the same vowel sound /u:/ which makes them rhyme with each other.
3. Best rhymes have more similar sounds at their end
Some questions on rhymes can have options that all end with the same sound.
In this case,
The word that has more similar sound towards the end is your best option.
Pronounce the words below, listen to the sound that they all end with, and pick the best rhyme for “laugh“.
Which of the following rhymes with LAUGH?
A. Cough
B. Sniff
C. Scarf
D. Enough.
Notice that the options all ended with the same consonant sound /f/ that LAUGH has. However, take a closer look and you will notice that:
- LAUGH ends with “aff“
- Cough ends with “off“
- Enough ends with “off“
- Sniff ends with “if“
- Scarf ends with “aff“
Therefore, the best rhyme for “LAUGH” is “Scarf” because they both have more similar sound towards their end.
